Union Island attractions -not only sun & beach
Easter is a big event on Union Island, festivities take place in both Ashton and Clifton throughout Holy Week in a festival called "Easterval" – book early, accommodations can be hard to find. In late May, at the end of the dry season (Union is a desert island) a significant event is "the Maroon". The Maroon celebration is a day long affair, beginning before dawn, and lasting late into the night. The Maroon is known for its drums, dancing and plentiful food – these are meant to entice the Gods to bring on the rains. During the Christmas Season people traditionally clean and decorate their homes and gardens for Christmas Day. Lots of food and cakes are cooked and baked. Traditional drinks are made like the famous "Sorrel" and “Gingerbeer”. On Christmas day the big day, many people mainly children go house to house and enjoy a good Christmas treat. Most people on the Island usually save there new and best clothing for this day. This day is not to be missed on Union Island. It gets very family oriented and unity and the love is felt through out the Island. Old Years: On this day people do many things but most people always remember God and thanks him for richly blessings and spearing life’s throughout the Year. There are always Church Services. Just remembering and thanking God. Manacou Hunting: An old age tradition which takes place mainly in the night. Young people especially children will leave their homes during moonlight and search for these small animals using torch light. Crab Hunting: Crab hunting is one of the all time favorite activities to do when you are at one of the beaches in Union Island. There is no beach trip without a night of crab hunting . There are crabs of different sizes which makes them a lot of fun to catch. Union Island reminds many of Tahiti, an island in the Pacific. This is because of its steep hills and Mountains. The mountain range which crosses the western part of the island has the highest peaks with Mounts Parnassus and Taboi standing around 1,000 feet above sea level. There you can find the rare cororico or rufus guan. This is a pheasant like bird with a loud chant. This bird is absent from all Caribbean Islands except Union Island and Trinidad and Tobago. Another highlight of these Mountains is the great Hiking it offers. beautiful, looping, graveled path parades through a dry forest which is surrounded by some of the most admirable species on the island. The nature of the trail allows up close and personal views of several spectacular introduced tree species, medicinal herbs, and local fruit trees, plus exotic wildlife. On top, these mountains would make a man feel like a prince and a woman feel like a princess. The view is just majestic. Best eye-filling view. From there you can see all the coastal areas, beaches and many of your other favorite islands. |
