Union Island travel guide and vacation resources
Union Island is the Southernmost of the Grenadines. Due to its dramatic silhouette, Union is also called by some the Tahiti of the West Indies. Its location just a few miles from the Tobago Cays, Mayreau and Petit St. Vincent has made it the ideal starting point for day charters to these islands. Union offers great hiking, beautiful deserted beaches and a bustling town, Clifton Harbour, from where the day charter yachts depart. The island is reached by chartered or scheduled aircraft, cargo boat, private yacht, or mail boat. The island has a small airport and is easily accessible from Barbados, Carriacou, Grenada and Martinique. Because of that it is usually suggested starting a crewed yacht charter in Bequia or St. Vincent and disembarking in Union Island. This way you get to see most of the Grenadines in a relatively short time. Over Easter weekend, Easterval features boat races, a calypso competition, and the Big Drum Dance, a festive cultural show that highlights the islanders' African heritage. If you want to get away from it all, Union Island is the place for you. Enjoy quiet days of reading, while taking in the beauty of the surroundings. Relax on one of our peaceful beaches. Chatham Bay on the west side of the island, is Union's most beautiful yacht hideaway, with its pristine, virtually private beach. The beach near Bigsand Hotel is lovely. You can bathe here in crystal clear water from a fine white sand beach. An added bonus is the proximity of the hotel terrace for drinks, snacks and meals, or served at your sun lounge chair if you prefer. Don't forget to buy some souvenirs! Union Island has a variety of stores and shops that offer many goods and services. One good shopping area is Clifton village. There you will find supermarkets, a gourmet shop, bank, pharmacy - and Erika's! Be sure to visit the market in the centre of Clifton. You will find a good selection of produce at the colourful stalls run by local ladies. Its only towns are Clifton and Ashton, and the island is home to approximately 3,000 residents. The official language is English. but French and German are spoken by some merchants in Clifton as well. There are several hotels on Union Island, as well as schools, churches and a small health clinic. The official currency is Eastern Caribbean (EC), though U.S. dollars and Euros are widely accepted. Telecommunications services are provided by Cable & Wireless which offers landline and wireless services (GSM); Digicel offers competing wireless services - including the network formerly operated by AT&T Wireless/Cingular. High Speed Internet services provided by Cable and Wireless - typical HS data rates of 512 kbit/s down and 128 kbit/s up. The island is connected to the Saint Vincent mainland by a series of digital microwave towers (through connections to neighbouring islands of Canouan and Bequia).
